Solo travel can be so fun and empowering. But we also know that solo travel can also get lonely.
As solo female travelers, we get asked all the time if we were lonely during our trip and how we meet people while we travel alone. So in this episode of the Passports and Coffee Podcast we are discussing how to meet people while traveling solo.
Collectively we have traveled to over 60 countries, most of which we have done solo. The one question we get asked when we return from a solo trip is, “Weren’t you lonely?” and our answer is no! Why? Because not only are we comfortable being alone but we know how to connect with other solo travelers while abroad.
If you are someone who wants to start traveling alone but still want to meet other people while traveling, don’t worry we have put together a list of ways on how you can meet other people while traveling solo.
One of the best ways to meet other people while traveling solo is by joining either an organized group trip or a day trip. Group trips and day trips are the best way to meet fellow solo travelers who have the same common interests.
We are huge fans of both group trips and day trips to meet other people. We actually met, on a group trip! We met in Vietnam, where we did not know anyone before the trip and left as best friends.
Day trips are a great way to meet fellow travelers. A lot of people who join a day trip are looking for the same thing as you.
Some of our favorite companies for day trips include GetYourGuide and AirBnB experiences. There are several different day trips that you can choose from ranging in size, price and adventure.
Staying in hostels is a guarantee way that you will meet fellow solo travelers. Why? Hostels are known for their social atmosphere. From common areas to organized tours, hostels create an atmosphere to spark socialization.
Whether you decide to save money and book a bed in a dorm room or a private bed in a hostel, there are several opportunities for you to meet people in a hostel.
Did you know that a lot of cities offer free walking tours? Whenever we travel to a new city, we also check to see if there is a free walking tour. Not only do you get to learn about the cities hidden gems and history but this is also a great way to meet fellow travelers.
If you are looking for like minded people to meet, we recommend joining Facebook groups. There are so many Facebook groups that you can join, such as digital nomad groups, destination specific groups and groups specifically for solo travelers.
Kayla is a part of several Facebook groups. One that she helps run is the Solo Girls Travel Facebook group that is filled with women from all over the world who love to solo travel. These groups are great for asking advice on locations or maybe create a mini meetup if a few people will be in the same place at the same time. This is a great way to meet fellow solo travelers.
Attending local events or joining in on activities is also a great way to meet people. Local events draw crowds of both locals and tourists to celebrate. But another great way to meet people is by partaking in activities. Some activities that you can look into is joining an art or cooking class.
Have you ever considered volunteering? Volunteering is a great way to meet people.
There are always great opportunities to volunteer at hostels in exchange for free accommodations. Another volunteer opportunity it to help out an an animal shelter or food shelter. Kayla volunteered at a food shelter in Puerto Vallarta and it was an amazing experience. Not only are you giving back to the community you are traveling in but you are also meeting fellow locals and travelers.
This can be a great and maybe uncommon way to meet people abroad. Swiping on a dating app, allows you to meet locals or fellow travelers for dinner and drinks. A feature on Bumble to consider is BumbleBFF. BumbleBFF is a version of Bumble where you swipe to find a new best friend.
Our last and final way for you to meet fellow travelers while abroad is simply making the first move and saying Hi. Sparking a conversation with someone is a great way to meet people. If you are like us, introverts, it may be hard for you to make the move, but we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and say Hi. Can you imagine if neither one of us said Hi? Our friendship or this podcast wouldn’t exist! So just as a reminder, you never know who you are saying hi to and where that hi could lead you!
