Is there truly a difference between a tourist and a traveler? Travel influencers on TikTok and Instagram seem to think that there is. In fact, to be considered a tourist now comes with a negative image. So in this weeks episode of the Passports and Coffee Podcast, we are going to settle this age old debate by looking at the top 10 differences between tourist and traveler.
Before we start talking about the “differences” between tourist and traveler, let’s first give you the definition of the two. A tourist is defined a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure. Where as, a traveler is defined as one that goes on a trip or journey. Personally to us, we think the words can be used interchangeably but we are seeing more and more people use the word traveler because a tourist is looked at negatively.
Personally we consider ourselves travelers but at the end of the day, if you are traveling to a destination in which you do not reside and you are experiencing everything that a new culture has to offer, you are in fact a tourist.
Social media is going hard with the debate of tourist vs traveler and here are some of the common differences, per travel influencers, between a tourist and a traveler.
A TOURIST sticks outs; A TRAVELER blends in
A TOURIST doesn’t mind being called a tourist; A TRAVELER hates being called a tourist
A TOURIST tends to travel in large groups or with their families; A TRAVELER tends to travel solo, or with one other person
As you can see, there are “differences” between a tourist and a traveler, but if you listen to the full podcast episode, you will learn that at the end of the day, we all have tourist tendencies. And we hope that you take on a new perspective to the words tourist and traveler. At the end of the day, we all travel differently and we don’t want a word to discourage someone to travel.
So we want to know, do you consider yourself a tourist or traveler? Do you agree with these top differences between the two? We would love for you to join the conversation and help change the perspective on the tourist vs traveler debate so everyone can feel comfortable traveling no matter how they travel!
